Useful tips for betting on sports in 2021
Ok, so there is a lot of TERRIBLE betting advice out there these days. Rolling with the general consensus is a guaranteed way to fail- because the general bettor fails more than he wins.
Best estimates say that only around 3% of sports bettors are profitable in the long run, meaning you will need to bet differently to have any real success. I’m not encouraging a complete “fade the public” strategy, but that is generally a good idea.
Without further ado, here are my tips for a successful betting strategy:
Fade the public (most of the time)
Let me give you an example of when you should fade the public:
Earlier in the college football season, Purdue was riding high after beating a top-ranked Iowa team. However, the public was shocked to see Purdue actually be home dogs against Wisconsin. Wisconsin had already lost 3 games to that point, and they were favored on the road against a team that just beat Iowa? The public jumped on Purdue. I had several friends tell me that was their favorite bet of the week. Well, Wisconsin ended up winning by 17.
When a line seems off like that, always take it. Don’t think you can outsmart Vegas, because you can’t. If your buddies from college love a line, fade it.
Don’t be above betting alternate spreads.
It might be looked down upon as “cheap” or make you seem risk averse , but alternate spreads are brilliant, especially when parlayed.
If the Titans are favored by 7 but you really feel more confident in a 3 point win, just bet alternate spreads -3. Sure, the odds aren’t as good, but you can make up for this by parlaying an additional alternate spread. This is especially useful in college basketball where the spreads are often outrageously high.
Emotional betting is a recipe for disaster.
We’ve all done it- you lose a couple bets in a row and feverishly search for something to quickly bet to break back even for the day. This is a terrible idea that rarely works out. Whenever you bet out of frustration, you throw logic out the window and the results are almost always negative.
Don’t forget your strategy and don’t get frustrated. Even the best bettors only win about 53% of the time.
Hope everybody has a blessed and happy 2022!
